>>5204108You decide to go see Corrine. You haven’t been able to formally thank her or Kate for saving your life. If it hadn’t been for them, you’d surely have met a grisly fate. You go looking for Corrine, who has conspicuously been absent from class for a few days. You try asking her squad mates where she might be, but the likes of Derrek, Byron and Ronald have no interest in chatting with you. Eventually though, you’re pointed in the right direction by Bernadetta, who spotted her sitting on the upper levels of the Monastery. You make your way there and find Corrine sitting alone on a bench, feeding a small orange cat.
>“There you are. I didn’t realize you were an animal person.”“I find I like them more than I like humans.” She says, not taking her eye off the animal. “How are you feeling?”
>“Physically? I’m fine. Mentally, that’s a whole different story.”“That’s to be expected. I haven’t exactly been myself lately either.” The cat finishes its meal, before snuggling itself next to Corrine and stretching out. “Killing was never an issue for me. Point me in whatever direction you need, and I’ll make the problem disappear. But that was the first time I’ve ever killed a…friend. I’m finding that a bit hard to reconcile. In fact, it’s all I find myself thinking about. Dreaming about.”
>“You didn’t know. And even if you did, what else was there that you could have done?”“Easy to say when you weren’t the one that split her head open with an axe.” She scoffs.
>You sit there in silence for a while before answering. “Before Monica took her away to do…whatever it is she did…she gave me a choice. She gave me the option to go in Martha’s place. I refused to play along with her games, not knowing what she meant by them. I’ve been wondering for a while now, if things might have been different had I volunteered to go in her place?”“The only difference would be that I’d have killed you instead of her.” Corrine sighs. The cat in her lap snoozes gently, being stroked softly. “I hate this. Are we going to feel guilt for the rest of our lives?”
>You shrug. “I don’t know. It’s possible. But I know I won’t rest until I see Monica dead.”
