Velecacia pulled at a few clasps of the cloak- it fell away from her, and underneath, she no longer wore the purple cloak she once had- showing what it had been hiding. It looked like a folded mass of, at first, but they grew, unfolded, and stretched, before finally flapping in a burst of black feathers- a quartet of wings sprung from her back, a soft glow from them hinting at something strange beyond the fact that a bird’s limbs were coming out of an otherwise human girl. She let out a deep sigh, her eyes shut in calm. There were a thousand things she wanted to say. Wished to address to all who had helped her, fought for her whether they knew it or not. Yet every moment she lingered further was a possible moment that all their efforts might come to naught- so she said but one thing to whoever would listen.
“Fare thee well.”
With a tremendous pushing of her black wings, Velecacia sped into the sky- towards the low clouds above. The astute eyed could spot the shadow of a great airship- but, as though hiding itself from the world, it deigned not to come out to receive the shape of what now could not be distinguished from a seabird.
The mission was finally complete. Yet the sounds of battle to the north told all that, even with this victory, the war was not yet over. Perhaps, might not be won.
