This image from Cosmas Indicopleustes, a 6th Century monk of the Eastern Church who is believed to have travelled to India. He considered the universe to be shaped as a treasure chest containing a mountain, around which the sun and moon revolved, and with the vault of the sky shaped as the curved chest lid. I was interested by the mountain box shape of this primitive cosmogony because it reminded me of a pseudosphere, a nonEuclidean hyperboloid geometry I read about in the past. Meanwhile there is also a simulation of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), I have never actually seen this before, this is apparently what the detected universe looks like, it is sort of filaments and strands of gas with large hollow void empty spaces in between. Maybe someday we will look back upon this model and consider it to be as quaint as the Treasure Chest Mountain Box world of the 6th century
