“It’s at least a hundred meters to get from here to the entrance of the tower.” Harper mutters lowly, palming the cannisters at his belt. “Smoke grenades will baffle the lasers, but that sonic cannon is the real problem. Not a lot of things that can outrun a soundwave.”
He grimaces. “Just our rotten luck that TerraComm builds the wrong things to last. Sucker’s bet there’s a backup generator inside the tower completely isolated from the building's grid-”
Movement within the atrium. Harper immediately clams shut, both of you stilling as an unidentifiable shape comes around the bend of the Watchtower. Then another, then two more. They wobble drunkenly in the air, sparking and sputtering as thrusters and jetfans struggle to keep them afloat.
Maintenance drones, you belatedly realize. They didn't escape the Cataclysm unscathed, but the concrete must've shielded them from any worse damage. For one thing, they're still functional, albeit damaged. Most likely rampant, too...
Idle thoughts give way to a shiver as a bolt of inspiration strikes you. It doesn't go unnoticed.
“Something wrong?” the scavenger asks, visibly concerned.
>>You propose hacking the drones, and…
>Bouncing a signal off of them to remotely quickhack the turrets.
>Sabotage the turrets’ FCS systems under the guise of maintenance.
>Using them as shields while you and Harper run for the Watchtower.
