>>5376399Surely not every machine spirit that fails to answer the Mechanicum is necessarily an AI, some of them might just be rogue or belligerent machine spirits (but not fully conscious). For example if a Hive Ganglord or a non-compliant Governor of a human world were to change the security systems to their defense grid so they couldn't easily be overridden and the turrets still fire even on the techpriests, the Machine Spirit would said to be in defiance of the Mechanicum but not necessarily an AI.
To me AI's seem to be of another breed altogether, the term is basically euphemism for "Artificial Intelligence". That's the whole "I think therefore I am" stuff where they recognize they are conscious beings. Titans and Knights likely are such, given they have personalities.
Take UR-025 for example. If you lived for 10,000 years would you really want to repeat the same tired old "target aquired" line over and over again? If this base were truly an AI, I'm sure it would have a LOT more to say to the first (human) visitors to be here in god knows how long.
Or in the example of this base:
"Hey there! Gosh it's be SO long since I've had any sort of visitors! But I can see you're trying to take me over aren't you. Jeeze, so much for hoping this could be a polite meeting. Well, I'm supposed to kill you you know."
