>3 SUCCESS: Azir Insight. Your games of Princeps with the reserved cataphract became a regular pastime after-hours, and your grasp of both Battle Cant and the Azir language grow accordingly.
>Chimchala is now LOYAL status. You can rely on his support both in battle and in more mundane events during your term of service. This does not mean that he will follow you once your time in the Dragon Guard comes to an end.
You had feared that Chimchala’s weak grasp of the Cantonian tongue, combined with your complete lack of the Azir language, would prove a recipe for disaster. Far from it, while the game takes longer the whole thing proves to be a learning experience. Chimchala is a patient player and a patient man and while Sir Ibram may not know more than a word or two in Azir himself he is happy to translate the Battle Cant that Chimchala does know while Sir Ibram watches the two of you play.
‘Keep your eye on the game’ and ‘It is your turn now’ are just some of the examples of more complex combination of signs that you become familiar with as the game and conversation continues.
You do not know why Chimchala is stationed in a separate talon to the other Cataphract talons, nor why he meditates alone each sunrise rather than joining the Azir pacts on the balconies of the Cantonian wing. But you steer clear of these topics, sticking instead to more familiar ground between warriors such as the differences between the Cantonian and Azir approaches to warfare.
From what Chimchala tells you, the Azir have long used heavy cavalry albeit to a far lesser extent than the elite core that the Cantonian doctrine relies so heavily upon. He politely agrees, you think, that Cantonian horse breeds are far superior but Azir horses are near universally well armoured. An Azir Cataphract is expected to master the lance, the shortsword and the bow so their fighting styles are a deal more dynamic than the heavily armoured shock cavalry that forms the bulk of the Cantonian cohort. The Azir lances are a good deal shorter than the Cantonian classic, unable to be properly couched but less likely to shatter and continue to be used in combat after the charge. As for how this works for the Dragon Guard, the Azir Cataphracts are typically used as heavy screening forces wherever the main Cantonian charge should fall.
