You pinched at a bandage wrapped around your stomach, pulled it away from yourself, and as soon as you let go, it snapped back into place. It was like elastic!
“Honestly, it doesn't even feel uncomfortable. It's like it was made for me.”
You flexed your fingers, noticed your claws again, and let out a dejected sigh, before returning your hands to your lap.
Young gave you an odd look of concern, but she didn't bother voicing her opinion. Probably for the best, if she was going to insult Khonshu like your mother had. That conversation was bound to go nowhere.
“This sidekick of yours,” Young began. “‘Wanda’, was it?”
You nodded, not at all bothered by the change in topic.
“Are the two of you close?”
“I mean…yeah, I feel like we're good friends already. She's got so much energy and a complete lack of boundaries, but I think that's why we get along. It's kinda nice to know that someone actually wants to be my friend so badly. Aside from B–the Huntsman, I mean.”
“Hey!” Ben called out from across the room. “You're making me sound desperate and creepy.”
You shrugged and gave him an unapologetic smile.
“I think ‘nurturing’ is the word I’d use.”
“My rep’s taking a serious hit. Now I know how Callisto feels.”
“Who?”
Ana and Ben locked eyes, then.
“Oh…she’s just a friend.” Ben answered, trying to sound casual.
Ana noticed the pause, but didn’t comment on it. Neither did you, for that matter. You wondered how the Morlock leader would react when she met Ana. Last time you saw her in Central Park, you got the impression that there was something going on between her and Ben. You just hoped that there wouldn’t be too much drama between all of them.
Ana chose that moment to go over to where Ben was receiving a lecture in phony prophecies, and sat down next to him. You waited until they were deeply embroiled in their conversation before you switched to your next topic.
“You probably already know, but I…met mom again.”
This was a conversation that you were planning on having with Ben as well, and he probably wouldn’t be too happy about being left out of the loop for so long, but…she needed to know.
“She’s running some sort of government operation, while dad’s out preparing for a vampire invasion. Have you heard anything about that, by the way?” you asked.
“About your father, or the vampire invasion?”
“...Both?”
“Hm. Your father, Albert, is probably still alive, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“‘Probably’?”
You didn’t know how reassuring that was supposed to be, but you were relieved that both your mother and grandmother thought that your father was okay.
“If Nari chose him, then he must be capable of at least defending himself.” Young concluded. “And if he’s half as tough as you are, then I don’t think he’ll have any problems.”
That got a weak smile out of you.
