Lorene stares at the eggs and bacon on her plate. The eggs stare back in silence. …Fuck. This fucking sucked. But if she didn’t protect her family from their own stupidity, everything she’d done would be pointless.
She looks up. “Uh, hey Dad. Actually… the debt collectors called the other day while you were at work. They, they said that an anonymous person paid off all of our debts! That’s why I said that we don’t owe them anything!” She attempts to smile cheerfully.

Her dad looks at her a moment, before sighing. “Lorene, if that really happened, you already would’ve told me that night. I know you; you’re a responsible girl.”
She looks back down at her eggs, avoiding eye contact. She can’t look at him right now.
Her father stands, and walks behind her, ruffling her hair before kissing her forehead. “I know you’re just concerned for us, Lorene. But, you really don’t have to be.” He smiles at her. “Your mom and I are adults. We’re here to take care of you! If kids had to look after their parents, what kind of messed up world would that have to be?”
Her shitty ancient Nokia buzzes. It was probably a text from Olivia, reminding her of the fact they needed to show up early to surprise Ruth. Her father notices.
“Anyway, stop worrying so much, go enjoy the day with your friends!” He glances at the clock on the wall. “I need to head off to work soon, anyway. Remember, you get even more fun with another celebration tonight!”
“…About that. It’s just another school year, dad, we don’t need to do anything special-”
Her dad kneels down to look her in the eye, pinching her cheek. “Don’t be silly, Lorene. Of course we need to do something special, because you’re my one and only special daughter.”
He stands up, grabbing his briefcase off the table and rifling through the papers inside. He’s getting ready to leave. You have one last chance.
>What are you going to do?
