>SELECTED: There is talk that the Duke is mustering for a major spring campaign. The banners are unlikely to be called before the snows thaw, but there will be swordwork aplenty now and into the winter in the neighboring territories to keep the major passes clear of the scalefiends until then. If this curries favour with the Duke, all the better. [Hearty]Fenegan, 27th Day of Bacrimun, 883 A.C.E. – Mid-Morning - Westfold Waters
The Coy Siren has left the security of the Langlish coastline some days ago now, heading into open waters towards Canton. Despite the enormity of the ocean still impressing you, the waves are far from empty of other traffic in the tradelines between the two nations and the sight of sails on the horizon is not an uncommon occurrence. For the most part the respective captains seem content to keep their distance, even these heavily patrolled waters aren’t entirely free from piracy. One Cantônian Cog does comes close enough for waves and shouts to be exchanged as you pass the other pay, and just two days ago a Langlish galleon dwarfing your own ship pulled up close enough to make the crew uncomfortable, but pulled away once the correct flag signals had been exchanged.
An interesting means of distinguishing honest traders from pirate types, but one that could surely be subject to abuse if a merchantman was taken and forced to divulge the current passing signals. Captain Alfonso assures you that such concerns are probably why the galleon pulled up as close as it did, implying that the man is familiar enough with the Langlish officers in these waters for them to know him by sight.
It has been fair weather this last week, and the Captain expects to reach the Cantôn Coastline in another week if the weather holds. From there, weather will be less of a concern than pirates, a cove that will shelter a ship from a storm will just as easily conceal a buccaneer from its prey as opposed to open waters.
