Mel tightened her grip on the spear, watching the bull demon pound closer through the roaring fire. It’d have to slow down to move around it, and she’d be waiting to drive Arx right through the beast. The minotaur picked up speed, moving directly toward her and the fire, finally clearly visible, a bull’s head, human arms and chest, rippling muscles visible under a layer of fur, animal legs tensing and bending for a leap.
“Oh shit.”
Mel lunged out of the way as the minotaur pounced into, and through the fire, sending a spray of embers, burning logs and ash through the air. She spun in time to find the minotaur picking up a burning limb, pulling it back to hurl it.

Power surged, and ice spears ripped from the ground in a flurry, two piercing directly through the beast, the other three leaving long gashes along leg and arm. It bellowed and twisted, shattered the spears, beating out flames that had sprouted across its body. Mel moved in, spear in hand, then something collided with the side of her head.
“Rwarrk!” Feathers, claws and beaks surrounded her. She twisted and hustled away, escaping the cloud, then took a wild swing with Arx, connecting with a pair of blue feathered menaces, sending them crashing to the ground. She crossed the distance and crushed both with a pair of stomps.
The earth shaking bellow of the minotaur was all the warning she got before the burning tree limb whipped by, inches from her face. Feathered shapes billowed out of the trees as the minotaur started heaving a massive rock from the earth. Smoke stung Mel’s eyes and throat.
