You shook your arms out and bounced on your toes a couple of times in preparation for the next set.
<span class="mu-r">“Oh, I’m just getting started. Now it’s <span class="mu-i">my</span> turn to serve.”</span>
Callisto made an exaggerated expression of worry, and you could feel your motivation surging at the sight of her smug assurance.
Unfortunately for you, however, Callisto wasn’t any worse at defending. Despite your speed and coordination, she was always wherever she needed to be, whenever she needed to be there. It was as if she was always two steps ahead of you. Before you even finished hitting the ball, Callisto was already moving to receive it.
It was an absolute blow-out on her end, and you started to notice a new sensation that had been mostly foreign to you after your fateful mutation. It was less a sense of danger, and more of a pervasive feeling of uncertainty that tainted your every movement and judgment. Callisto’s movements were so refined, so effortless, that you started to lose confidence in your own abilities. It became harder to perform at your peak ability, and if it wasn't for your innate physical talents, you suspected that this game would’ve been absolutely hopeless.
The more you played, the more you started to realize how wide the gap between you truly was. And no amount of tenacity or gumption could prevent you from losing without the use of your full skill-set. That shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did, but it was hard not to get frustrated in the face of what currently seemed like an insurmountable wall.
By the end of it, you were sweating, your breathing slightly labored as you glanced up at your opponent. She was no longer a grumpy, one-eyed sewer queen, but was instead a fiercely competitive tennis ace.
Callisto ran a hand over her sweaty forehead and through her dark disheveled hair, looking both revitalized and reborn. There was a wild, hungry look in her eye, like she was still searching for a competitor that could measure up to her expectations.
By this point, your match had attracted a decently-sized audience. There were a lot of people marveling at Callisto’s prowess on the court, and a few of them were pointing at you as well. You didn’t want to know what they were saying about you.
What will you say?
>”Why’re you living in the sewers when you could be dominating the tennis world!?”>”I’m surprised you don’t come here more often. You seem to be enjoying yourself.”>”What’s the score again? I kind of lost track a while back.”>”...Double or nothing?” (Try to make a decent showing in your last few sets.)>"I know when I'm beat. Why don't you turn and give the crowd a bow?">Write-in.Pastebins:
