Might be "Arthur" was actually his dad, the dad of his old body at least. And his corpse is supposed to be in Avalon. Or that might be over complicated and "Arthur" is just a compatible husk Merlin made ahead of time with some Ancient Magic preservation charm on it. Maybe it is just his friend/protege/whatever and Merlin isn't as evil as I think. Maybe we should ask that painting more about what he knew of Merlin, before we go to Avalon? IDK, Merlin isn't omniscient as QM said but had a LOT of time if we are right, to plan ahead.
