“...Look- I said I'm sorry! How was I supposed to know it was so literal!”
The snail is chewing out Nasir- with his hands. The deliberate motions and heavy fists and points towards Nasir lets the rest of the party understand what the Snail is saying despite not knowing what the actual hand-signs mean. Nasir gets a much better gist of it.
“I mean, everyone saw it said a pregnant woman. So logically, we all assumed that was part of the riddle- not the solution hidden in plain sight. Of course, since it didn't tell us which child died to what, the only way for there to be one child left for the mother to save would be the one that hadn't been born yet, so I guess that was really obvious it meant the unborn in her belly...”
Jon, already having moved past this nonsense, looks into the chamber that the door lead to- a large ceremonial hall. The roof of which is so high with its arches roughly carved into the mountain stone that your torch cannot even illuminate the highest points.
”Wow! This is a cathedral. Richard, this could have been the great sacred site of the local mystery cult. Is this really the first you've ever heard of it?”
”We have our own places of worship. This is something else- a long lost sect maybe, or the foundation of it- long forgotten. The ways of these people have degenerated over the years- lost to the mountain like so many other treasures...”
”What do you think it was used for?”
Nasir, eager to get away from the angry Snail, speaks up.
“This seems to be a funerary chamber- the place the dead were brought and rites read before being entombed elsewhere. One of these side passages goes on a long ways- I think it may have lead out of the mountain at some point, but now thousands of tons of rock block the way.”
”..Should we really be looting a church?” Elly asks, to nobody in particular.
”It's long forgotten- and we can loot a temple without spitting in the eye of the Gods. Besides, this is Richard's cults' ancient origin. It would make things right to return the riches to the people.”
”After our cut, right Jon?”
”...”
“Holy... everyone... come look at this...” Richard called from the central chamber.
