With the Remnants handled and some very skilled but old “consultants” added to your fledgling government, it’s time to deal with what could be a death blow to the progress you’ve made the last three months.
As you walk through The Strip and towards the NCR Embassy, you run through all of the ways that the assault on the border crossing could have been avoided. You should have stationed Securitrons around and at the crossing itself. You should have leveled Nipton the minute you caught wind of an organized presence of raiders. You could have…
Yet the reality is that these things happen and if it wasn’t this it could have been something else. A lot more people would be dead if it wasn’t for your quick thinking and the luck of being down in Primm at the time.
Time will tell if Ambassador Dawes will see it thay way and there’s a non-insignificant chance that the whole situation has already been decided by that prick in Shady Sands and this is all political theater. That dark thought clouds your mind as you pass the NCR ambassador guards and head to the main building.
The ambassador’s staff seems to have returned to a somewhat pre-independence level with a secretary taking her place at the front desk and a handful of aides scurrying back and forth. Though truthfully there may not be too many places in the Wasteland deserving of an embassy.
You have on your best suit knowing that you’re not exactly in the strongest spot here and looking presentable though still very dangerous can go a long way. The secretary sees you approach the desk.
“Welcome, Courier Six. The Ambassador and his team are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Please, follow me.”
Team? Maybe you should have brought a few of your Secretaries though the reality is your ability still surpasses all of them in the ways that count. Though you wouldn’t have minded Cass tagging along….
That’s another thought you banish away as you’re ushered into the innermost conference room. While the embassy may be staffed it seems that they skimped on maintenance as the wallpaper is peeling and nothing looks too terribly clean.
Ambassador Dawes is sitting opposite of you at a long mahogany table flanked on both sides by the aides you recognize from the McCarran Treaty. They had the decency to place ice cold water on the table at least. The Ambassador leans over to shake your hand as you approach the table.
Dawes: Courier Six, I’m glad to see you alive and well. You’ve been a very busy man, so I’ve heard.
You grasp his cold and clammy hand while suppressing a shudder.
[Ambassador, I’m sorry it’s not on better terms. I imagine I know what this is about.]
The two of you take your seats while he puts on a sad face.
Dawes: Yes, it's unfortunate that we're not enjoying some Sunset Sarsaparilla over happier times. We both know about the attack on the NCR Border Crossing and while your, ahem, quick intervention averted further catastrophe, this is very bad.
