In real life, there was of course the movement for ESG and Sustainable / Socially Responsible Investing hehe, I never really believed in it or participated though plenty of others did. I feel like just saying ALIENS is the easiest route, perhaps too easy, it could of course be more mundane like you mentioned eg some pharma corporation.
One thing I did think about is because in the Isonomy held worlds, it is illegal to dream. The background to this is because their corporations are all algorithmic, it is like chatGPT or other LLMs or the generative AI image makers when they produce artifacts and nonfactual errors or hallucinations (ie forbidden to dream etc) So the background thinking I had was because the currency was meant to be a sort of computational spaceship "fuel", dreaming would be illegal under the Isonomy. Perhaps that is where the scarcity of the currency comes from, unusual dreams
Originally, I was just going to have one in-game monetary unit, ie Isono / ISD (Isono means sin I think in Zulu, South African language) Then I watched a lot of the Expanse, where the spaceship cockpits have a special seat that injects drugs into people to survive the flip and burn high-g forces. In the TV series they just call it "juice".
I was inspired by this, and decided to give this idea a different name with some scientific inspirations - so I looked into animals that can survive freezing, including insects etc which have blood named haemolymph. Cocoon sugar is the name of trehalose, that actual chemical substance. So if you have not seen The Expanse, this is what I am imagining and thinking of with Haemolymph and also where my worldbuilding comes from and the background to it.
