"Fool, I did not!" She puffed her cheeks. "The first thing I did was declare myself as awoken from my slumber! THEN I placed a curse of death upon you and Herta. I am not a harbinger of corruption; I merely sought to fortify my sacred domain and claim this hallowed ground as my destined haunt!"
"For someone that says she's against corruption, you seemed pretty apprehensive about Holy Magic." You reminded her.
"Hmph, maybe so." Yumi admitted. "Even I once bathed in the reverence of the masses. Herta's sacred incantations are of no concern to me so long as her radiant magic does not sear my ghostly vessel."
"Oh?" Your interest was piqued. "You used to be worshiped?"
"I see you are impressed!" More like surprised. "Well, Maste- Lord Savant! After traversing from graveyard to graveyard I, the the cursed servant Yumi, descended upon a forsaken hamlet. It was there that my destiny's currents converged. A mere moment later, and the charade of masquerading as the village's resident deity proved to be simple."
"And you planned this?" You were starting to see her in a different light.
"How could I not?" She seemed proud. "The fact that I accidentally trapped myself in the shrine was of little significance-" And just like that she stumbled on her words. "Ah, I mean, that is to say-"
She tried to cover her slip-up, but it became clear that she didn't plan anything. What happened was that she accidentally trapped herself in a local shrine— with her whole pretending to be a goddess thing being a big misunderstanding thanks to her grandiose words.
Anyway, she told you about her exploits as the local tutelary spirit of some village whose name she didn't bother remembering. After she got the hang of things she would try to haunt the people there, to mixed success. It was here that she was able to practice her curses, eventually showing a talent in said skill.
"Those fools knew not of the protective aegis I provided for their small community. They banished me, —Yumi— the wielder of forbidden power, from their mundane lives!"
In other words; once they got sick of Yumi's chuuni-isms, and realized she was just a ghost with no divine origin, they all ran her out of town. She tried to do the same thing in the next town she went to, and the one after that, but they all ended in failure. Since then she realized she didn't want to be a goddess and adopted her moniker as the 'cursed wandering servant'.
"I'm guessing pretending to be a goddess is treason against the Emperor." You said.
"What?" Yumi frowned. "Why would that stir any shadows? Unless I, the wandering servant of darkness, proclaim dominion or rebellion over the Faceless Emperor, there is naught but silence in reply to my actions."
"What do you mean?"
"The Chrysanthemum Citadel may hold a slumbering god, but the Shogunate's marionettes dance to strings unseen! The Shoguns crave only tribute and the silent awe of the Emperor's subjects."
