Go and check.” You settle with a sigh. “But I’ll come with you.”
“Do as you please.” Millicent snaps as she presses past you, her gun up. “Just stand behind me. You’ll get in the way.”
You follow along after the girl, her strides quick and intentful; as much as you doubt the wolf truly does lurk behind the monolith, you might hope to ease any embarrassment or provide assistance should some other beast lurk by these graves. You inch away from the group and off to the side of the path–the huntress slowly rounds the wall of the monolith, a finger on the trigger..
The rifle’s burst of light near blinds you as she cracks off a shot the moment she rounds the tomb. The sound howls through the quiet of the hills, near deafening, tearing off a chunk of stone from the cenotaph and scattering rubble along the flowers. You look to the shot as the rifle’s smoke clears–.. and no one stands behind the grave. It truly was in her mind.
“What?--I..” Millicent’s look turns from rage to confusion. “I thought–”
“What are you doing? Do you realize how loud that was?” A look of fury flashes across the dhampir’s features as she approaches the two of you. “Every single contender in the CORPSE must’ve heard that.”
