>>5748319“You stand before the presence of the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Lord Bennett Clement!” The dark mage, Fritz, announced. “In the name of the Goddess, state the reason for your arrival!
You’d fought against this accursed man before. Back in Tauros Village, he’d escaped your grasp, only to be captured the next time you’d encountered him at Marche. His name was Fritz. Back then, he’d been sacking villages for the Western Church, riling up the conflict between them and the Central Church of Seiros. You’d thought that after you captured him, he’d faced execution at Garreg Mach. But it seems that this worm had somehow not only managed to survive, but also found his way back to his master.
“Fritz.” The Patriarch says calmly, raising one hand to signal his retainer to back down. “That’s quite alright. These men are our honored allies in the fight against heresy. I would ask that you please treat them with the proper respect that they deserve. Now then, Prince Leif. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.” Bennett stands in order to bow before Leif.
“It’s nice to be treated with some courtesy, for once.” Leif says smugly. “I found your man Montgomery to be quite rude. He couldn’t wait to blow me off so that he could run, tail between his legs, back into his little smithy.”
You expect Bennett or Fritz to bristle at the sign of disrespect towards the commanding officer of their army. Instead, Bennett merely smirks, while Fritz remains perfectly expressionless.
“Please…forgive Montgomery.” Bennett says with a smile. “He’s a very knowledgeable person, but I believe he’s always lacked the grace necessary when it comes to dealing with others. I assure you; he meant no ill will towards you and your men. You are all an invaluable asset as we seek to destroy the throne of lies that is Garreg Mach.”
“Heh…seems odd you’d place such a man in command of your army. Was there truly no one more qualified to assume that position?” Leif says with a shrug. You notice that, though it may be only incrementally, he’s moved a tad closer towards where Bennett is standing.
“What Montgomery lacks in refinement, he most certainly makes up for in experience.” Bennett says. “And besides, now that you’re here, I believe you’ll be able to smooth out any edges in his plans.” He turns from Leif to scan your group. “Is one of these your Oracle?” He asks. “I was told she’d be coming.”
“Ahh, unfortunately she did not make the trip.” Leif replies. “The northern cold has a habit of claiming those with weak constitution.” Again, almost imperceptibly so, he move closer towards Bennett and Fritz’s position.
“Oh really? That’s too bad.” Bennett smiles. Unlike Montgomery, you get the impression he doesn’t care about Maeve’s death. “Well then, I understand you are to be at the front of the upcoming battle. Why are you before me now?”
