It's the missing link between ground infantry and scout knights, which obviously can't be filled by just dreadnoughts or cyberneticae.
I would call them "Men at Arms" for they come from Noble Houses, yet fight to protect the Knights. Ground infantry would be therefore, the equivalent of serfs and miliita to them.
We know that human piloted mechs are canon from the Lords of Gardinaal, and I'd be 100% sure in at least some part of the DAoT mankind had a thing for single pilot battlesuits type craft.
