I am trying to imagine a setting like this without it turning into Disney losing USD 300m on John Carter of Mars lol (I actually quite enjoyed some of it) or whatever happened in that space empress toilet cleaner story with bees? cat-men? and bizarre CGI Jupiter Ascending argh. I guess there is also Chronicles Of Riddick necromongers, and Dune.
Maybe it is not possible, Star Wars and 40k too successful and have displaced all Sword And Planet between them, the anon earlier already mentioned how space fantasy is inherently a bit ridiculous given vast distances planets and cultures etc.
The way I would fix this is with unrelenting DEATH HORROR SEX, these settings have lost the doom-laden tragic omen/sense of foreboding that is pervasive in ancient myths like Gilgamesh, Beowulf or even Shakespeare's retelling of Antony and Cleopatra. If you naively retell Cinderella in outer space you get Jupiter Ascending or new Star Wars?
