The Dragon King makes that unsettling, inhuman rattling sound again, laughing at you, though his face doesn’t move and even his shoulders remain still.
“Everything comesss at a price,” he tells you. “But to sserve a God of Ssecretss and Sschemesss… One must provide him the former, or aid him in the latter. It isss asss simple ass that. With hiss great intellect and age-beyond-reckoning, one might not even ssee the fruition of that plan in which one playsss a part. No for generationsss!”
He hesitates, and then adds: “But the part WILL be played. Of all the Dark Godsss, hiss will isss the greatesst mystery to me.”
“And if you defy him?” you ask weakly. “Go against him?”
“No myssstery there,” the Dragon King replies. “He iss alssso known among my kind asss The Baleful Beholder. One doesss not want his eyes focussed upon one in anger, Mage Apprenticccce.”
