It was upon divine providence for them for as they ascended the steps they must have been going in the right direction. After traveling for what must have been a full hour the sounds of things other than themselves began to make itself known to the two men.
When the green glow of that green crystal began to shine at the corner of their travel both of the men extinguished their torches. It was best not to attract much attention especially when Lucian would need to drop his torch anyways to wield the Scythe.
The faint glow was joined by the hooting and hollars of things that were clearly not human. Neither of them spoke it but they both would agree that it did not sound like the high pitched ratmen that they have been fighting. These were beastial grows much closer to the sounds the Kroxigor Bok used instead of the screams of dying rats.
When they turned the corner to see the massive room, they were witness to the monstrosities that laid within.
As a peasant knight, one who barely understood the outside world except for his trips towards Aquitaine and bedtime stories, these were not even the things of nightmares. His eyes glanced across the pits scattered about and saw things that he could not comprehend.
Some of the monsters were hulking abominations whose muscles were the size of Lucian. The obvious strength of the monsters rupturing through their flesh.
Others were far more like beasts, simply that their size was several times that of what they should have been. Large elongated teeth that looked capable to bite and tear a man in half with a single thrust of its mighty jaws.
Many had multiple limbs and looked less like finished products but the stuff of lucidity. An abstract idea of what a living creature could be if you tried to build a person from what you see through a rather murky lens.
All of these monsters shared one trait, that they were all some variation of Skaven. Lucian could not understand how these creatures were made or produced, for they were the stuff of horrors.
