How do we translate this feeling to Quests? There is a difference between quests (narrative worlds driven by conversation/votes) and board or tabletop games (with set rules and interactions made well in advance)- and half of that is presentation. As being an imageboard, 4chan is comprised of a single image file (selected by user), a name field, and a text field with some extra shit (ID, post number, etc) that can't be controlled by the user. This greatly limits the ability to present anything other then raw text and maybe an image, webcomic style, which is typically only something the QM is going to present. The QM also can't control what the players post or how they format or present their posts, further limiting this fine ability to control the absolute presentation of the Quest to readers (especially archive readers- which are going to be the vast majority of readers as time goes on). While the freedom of users to post what they want is very 4chan culturally, I would be lying if I wasn't remiss over the fact that shitty formatt votes, retarded political commentary, or poor/meme image macros didn't ruin some of the vibes of the quest as a presented whole- but once again you'd have to be some kind of autistic control freak to care about shit like that. (like me).
In a perfect world, once again, you'd give more "toys" for users to play with. Some of this is simply impossible given the limitations of a browser based website and its ancient infrastructure. An example would be posts which are themselves modeled after the character (avatar of the character w/ name) or giving someone a unique text color or formatting trick to make them stand out. You can't do this on this website. Other ideas are actually possibly but too autistic to make work- I actually strongly considered trying to send out images of the Night Without Stars characters doing cool combat moves or casting spells and giving these raw images to the players, who could then post them along with their posts where they roll- giving a more visual sign of their involvement to their contributions to the quest. But how to actually do this in the thread? One idea would be to simply post the image in a spoilered post, and let the player post it later, but there is no guarantee they would do it or wouldn't fuck it up somehow. Another idea would be to post it then delete it quickly after it is saved, or to send it 3rd party (like on Discord or the /qtg/), but there's no guarantee you could even get into contact with the player- it's an anonymous game after all. Thankfully, these are merely visual qualia and not actually important to the quest as a whole. But once again I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish there was a way to send files to users or trick-out their posts, maybe granting special formatting privileges to IDs or having a form of the tegaki widget where you could straight up send tokens (tabletop games) or what have you to individual forum users.
