“Emile?” The rasping voice of Father Towbray reaches you, you turn to see his scuffed and dusty hand reaching out to help you up to the next ledge. You stretch out your hand just as it comes again.
…when the lash of the master’s whip holds no sting. When the scourge of the tyrant’s cross holds no fear…
Your breath catches in your throat as the world spins.
“Emile, what i-” Father Towbray’s chapped lips motion, but only fragments reach your ears. His eyes turn from exhaustion to concern, and then pleading. “-alk to me, my son.”
Behind him, you distantly register Brother Joab and Brother Caleb begin to move in your direction, their outstretched hands joining his. Some part of you knows that the cliffline line is only a step away, but you know you are never in a moment’s danger.
“Do not weep…” You whisper, moisture tickling at your eyes as you smile at them Father Towbray’s pleading eyes, his expression transforming into one of rapture as he begins to understand.
Do not weep for the fate that might befall you if you stand. Save your tears for the future of your children to come if you do not.
“What is wrong with him?” Joab’s voices his concern to counterpart Caleb. You remain vaguely aware of their movements and words, but it all seems in slow motion. Much like when you’re at your best in battle.
“He was fine a moment ag-Cain on the Cross he’s getting close to that edge! Quick, grab him!”
“Don’t touch him!” Towbray’s voice rings out like a distant church bell. “He can hear...”
The day is calm, the skies clear. Even the wind is still. But here and now, miles from the sea, it reminds you of that moment in the storm. Later you could not say whether you slipped… or stepped away from the cliff edge. An act of faith perhaps, or madness.
This world is the realm of Man, promised to us by He Who Was. Is. And Shall Forever Be.
You only fall for a split record or two, the rope tied around your arm snaps taut. Much like that moment at sea again, all but certain death waits below. However this time, the rope does not break.
