Mel woke up with a groan and stumbled out of her tent into the bright afternoon sun. For the first time in days, years even, she had slept past sunrise, body relaxed in the comfort that nothing was coming for her, not magic, or barbarians, or any of armies, guards, slavers, irate innkeepers and crooked slumlords. Just her.
And a camp empty of food, a vast wilderness, and an empty canteen. Well, at least the canteen was easy enough to fill, and her stomach was still full from last night’s impromptu feast. She ambled down the hillside to the spring and studied the rune circle she had uncovered next to as water slowly trickled into her canteen. A moment’s focus called the arcane world into view, confirming what she had suspected, magical power was present in the circle, but only a single level. She hadn’t yet gone over the section of ‘Student of Magic’ dedicated to rune circles yet, but she had to wonder what would happen if she marred one of the symbols. She dismissed the thought for the moment and capped her canteen. She needed to sort out the plan for the day before anything else.
Plans. The word brought the bigger scope to mind. She had dealt with the immediate threat that had been thrust onto her, but now what? She couldn’t just idle here aimlessly, there was a kingdom she had to return to, a world to take by the throat. But she’d need more than just a handful of ice spears and the wind for that. She was going to need power, and a lot of it. And a way out of this place for that matter.
