>>5358218The worst part about an ambush isn’t the bloody, merciless fighting that goes on. The men and women shrieking in shock and fear as your blades fall on them pitilessly. The wretched smell that lingers in the earth once the fighting is all said and done. The bodies that lay cooling in the mud.
The worst part is the boredom. The waiting for hours to do all the aforementioned grim deeds. There’s no chatting going on as that may potentially give your position away. There’s no fire to rest by. You can’t even take a nap, lest you fall into a deep slumber and miss your target completely. Instead, you just sit there and do what you usually did during such operations, watch Diana. She’d picked up drawing as a hobby to pass time during moments such as these. Unfortunately, she wasn’t very good. As you watch her adding what look like spikes to a pegasus for the twelfth time that day, you’re stirred by the sound of footsteps. Peering through the field of vision allowed to you by the trees you’re hiding in, you spot dust being kicked up from afar. Wagons, horses, and men are slowly making their way towards you.
The enemy caravan consists of eight sealed wagons being pulled by pack horses. From the effort the animals exert, you can tell that the wagons are most certainly full. Caleb’s headcount was accurate. There appears to be forty “caravan guards” accompanying the baggage train. Mostly infantry and a few cavaliers from what you can tell. From their formation and the quality of their gear, they seem to be more skilled than your average sword for hire. Nothing you and yours can’t handle though.
Your men have their orders and know how to carry them out. Once the caravan is finally in position, you and Damian make your move. Twin jets of flame are conjured at the entrance and exit of the pass, effectively trapping the entirety of Echiverria’s caravan. The path below erupts into chaos as the horses cry out in fear at the sudden influx of fire. You hear the guards shouting in confusion.
“What’s going on?!”
“Are we under attack?!”
“Bandits!”
