It is at this point that you realize that one of the scrubland caravens at the very edge of your drone-surveillance radius had begun to split. A small but sizable contingent was peeling south, heading directly towards the ruined town. You estimate arrival within two days.
As usual, you move the visual feed onto one of the many holoprojectors inside the vehicle bay. As the drone flies closer, a orange-red banner gradually resolves through the heat haze, showing some kind of native animal silhouetted against a blazing sun motif.
"House Ranke..." Says Liscia, squinting. "Probably arriving for one final supply stop before moving deeper west on an expedition. Horrible luck for us given their current position close to the crown." Alberico, however, looks absolutely mortified, and he clamps his mouth shut with an almost audible motion.
You catch him before he has a chance to recover though, and you bore your optic unit into his eyes. Fortunately, only one of you has the biological need to blink.
Alberico sighs, takes off his hat, and runs his hands through his hair. "I have some passing familiarity with that house..."
Both you and Lisica stare some more.
"House Ranke is led by my biological father, Leip Ranke." He pauses. "I ran a decade ago though, and I doubt that he would shame himself by acknowledging me - assuming that he even recognizes my face..."
As Liscia's chokes on her reply, you begin considering your strategy once the caraven arrives.
