Deployable castles and defending them would be familiar to Knights who can man them, and make excellent hard points to secure ground objectives or encircle an enemy. It's probably energy efficient to use them as teleportation stations to redeploy forces on the ground rather than making them have to go all the way back into orbit.
Dorn would approve of being able to snap our fingers and have a ring of forts appear ready to defend.
