You head deeper in and it only gets warmer, as you begin to notice lines upon lines of server racks several of them look like they’ve been melted or set on fire, the further in the more look that way. Finally at the end of the long room was a massive machine that was shaking heavily, fans running at maximum capacity tubing pumping some sort of coolant at maximum capacity, everything that can be done to cool the machine down, and yet the damn thing was so hot it was overwhelming this system.
Jacob stops everyone, “Holy shit…” he takes a moment to look it over, “I think that’s a ZAX… and by the looks of it, one that’s on it’s last legs.” he steps forwards before stepping back a bit, “Jesus Christ! The heat coming off that thing goes through the damn power armor…” he pulls out the instrument, “fucking hell you could almost boil water with how hot this thing is.” you look at the thermometer and see it fluctuating between 80 and 90 C. Jacob seems flabbergasted looking at this, “That thing should have blown up ages ago. How the hell is it still hanging on?”
Finally there’s a flicker of light on one of the screens and the temperature of things goes up ever so slightly as a radio comes on,
“Z.A.X 1.3R requests user identification… Z.A.X requests termination of current protocol, Z.A.X estimates 5 years more of functional operation before Z.A.X is terminated due to components burning out…. Reporting 5 out of 128 motherboards still functional, 3 out of 128 processing units still functional, cooling insufficient…. Error identification not provided, please provide identification…. Error”
Everyone looks at each other with some degree of shock, the machine repeats itself, “Please provide identification….” You snap out of it, “Jacob give it some of the override codes.” He nods, listing off several of them, before the machine beeps,
“Security clearance Secret accepted, what may Z.A.X 1.3R do for you today? As noted Z.A.X is current suffering from overheating issues, response times may vary. Total processing power available for other tasks 3%.”
What do you ask the Z.A.X?
