“My dear, I understand your feelings on this matter-”
“No, you don’t!” Cassandra objects, having to catch herself from yelling with Cici still in her arms. “Nobody seems to understand just how terrible they really are, what they’re truly capable of when something they want is on the line or something they deem as impure is in their way! Eugenics doesn’t even scratch the surface!”
“Cassandra, what are you-”
“I’m saying that my people are monsters, Brad, that we’ve used our long lives to warp and twist everything around us until it perfectly suits our needs: even people… especially people!”
“Cassandra…” Mina interjects. “I’m going to put Cici to bed now, if you don’t mind.”
Wild-eyed as she is, that does seem to bring the woman back to herself as she hands over her daughter to the other snake woman with the utmost care and prepares to continue.
“My dear,” Brad pre-empts, raising his hand defensively. “Many people have suspected, but there’s just never been any evidence!”
“That’s because they won’t let there be any evidence, Brad!” Cassandra seethes. “Because anyone who would dare speak out against them meets with an accident or disappears or is otherwise stricken down as if by ‘fate’, but I’m telling you right her and right now, the difference between fate and a plot is just 500 years of hard work! The voices have seen it themselves!”
