You reckoned that this guy, and you mean, you'd only just seen him and him you for the first too, didn't have much reason to attack you. He looked sort of like some ordinary villager or something. Somebody you'd have expected to see out of Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia. Or maybe the Edo period. You knew a <span class="mu-i">little</span> history.
Hand on the gun, you approached him at a moderate pace.

You knew you were wary for a reason. Predictably, he makes a move as soon as you're close, but not to hurt you. Rather, he pulls you out of the way as something zips by your head, nearly hitting it had he not acted.
<span class="mu-i">"Careful, the Kesaran-Pasaran are extra rowdy, they smell human flesh on us."</span>
"Wha- What? What the fu... what- what are those?!"
You were visibly distraught. Okay, you're starting to think this is a lot more serious than just teleporting across earth. Last time you checked, planet earth didn't have any known species that could be described as... floating white puffballs with mouths and eyes! (°д°)
<span class="mu-i">"Woah! Steady there... they may be small but a Youkai is a Youkai still. But I take it you've never seen them before."</span>
"Huh? Yo-...kai? What are you talking about?"
<span class="mu-i">"What? You mean to tell me you don't know what a Youkai is...? Hmm... you're not from around 'here', are you?"</span>
"I have no idea what's going on, man. No clue where this is, I just sort of... woke up here!" You explained.
The guy has a knowing look on his face and he nods.
<span class="mu-i">"Well, all I can tell you is that those creatures there, those Youkai, are man-eating beasts. Don't think their pathetic appearance makes them any less ferocious, they'll swarm you like fish to feed and strip the flesh from bone if you get surrounded by them! Come along, this way now."</span>
Man-eaters? Really now? You've gotta be... this is absurd.
You have trouble taking your eyes off of those things, but this guy in the straw hat is going further up the hill that the waterfall stream extends from, and you certainly didn't want to find out if what he's saying about them eating human flesh is for real. You swallowed nervously as you tailed behind him while he pushed through the bushes and the bamboo.

"An outsider? What's that mean? What am I 'inside' of?"
<span class="mu-i">"You're in the eastern lands now. This region is named Gensoukyou. We don't normally get many of you foreigners here. The Youkai usually prevent that, they scare your kind off. They always react especially violently to your kind."</span>
"Oh, well that's great."
<span class="mu-i">"No worries about it, you stick close to me, and I'll take care of you. I know my way around, to- through the Youkai."</span>
