Past the mountain bend there is indeed a chokepoint - a narrow bridge that leads to the palace. You observe that the undersides of the cliff are not entirely sheer - it would be possible for a determined party to scale partially down the cliffside lying hidden in wait perched upon a ledge, just beneath the bridge, and thereby manoeuvring behind an unsuspecting enemy after they had made the crossing. However you feel this would be a very dangerous strategy.
