“My father was.. kind. And he sought to teach us to be so too, even if that all went belly-up when he was gone.” Ava observes. “He was well-read. He was quick, clever, with razor-sharp wit. He did his best to attend to his family–all of his family–even if our circumstance made that difficult. And he, more than any other, more than even I, was fond of monster girls. They were his lifeblood.”
“I suppose I see where you get it from.” You raise a brow–though, you can’t say you have much of a right to shame a man for his interests. You look back to the dhampir, whose gaze is still cool and quiet. “Are you okay, Ava?”
“Mmm. I understand more than anyone that this is the natural course of all living things–for you, for the others, and for me.” Ava sighs, hands at her side. “In a mere century’s breadth, you’ll all be long gone. And I can resign myself to that, as I have many times before. And, as for my father.. I understand that he is not above that natural course. He was just a man. So.. I’m okay. I’m alright. Yes, I’m alright.”
“..Ava?” You glance down to the dhampir.
“..I-I mean, sure. All of that stuff’s true, but..” Ava smiles weakly, her face slick with tears. “He was still my dad, y’know? So, of course it still hurts..”
