It is impossible to commit to parchment every glorious victory and mighty feat achieved by the Dragon Guard, even the greatest and most notable with only the scantest description of each would warrant a separate scroll on its own. But what can be said here is that not once in it's entire history has the Dragon Guard withdrawn from the field. Once battle is committed and the Dragon Banner has been planted, it does not move until the field is taken in victory or the last man falls to the enemy blade. On no less than three separate occasions the entire Dragon Guard has perished to the last man when afield, fighting against hopeless odds long after the often less reliable vassal levies and mercenary contingents that make up the mainstay of Cathagi armies has been routed and victory is impossible. These forlorn last stands, far from being a disgrace to the next generation of warriors, are held as the greatest moments of their ancestors’ history. There is no small amount of glory to be had in emerging victorious over lesser foes, but to face death unflinching against fearful odds with your fellow comrades is treated with veneration through song, longstanding memorial vigils and other pieces of military tradition.
Such last stands, forlorn or not, have become less and less common in recent centuries as foes familiar with the reputation of the Dragon Guard, or have even had the misfortune of testing them before, often shirk from direct conflict for this very reason.
