>>5948679>>5948476>>5948284>>5948275A part of you just wants to scream at these elves to back off before they cause an irreparable international incident. You’re wise enough, though, to know that would surely have the opposite effect. What you need to do now, you reason, is to project calm certainty. You need to speak with authority, assuring both the Prince of Bloodrise and the not-quite-rioters that they are safe from one another at once.
“Please, everyone, stay calm,” you say, quickly signing the same thing to the Unknowable Prince: ‘Be calm, it’s all okay.’
“What IS that thing?” an elfman demands. “What have you humans brought into our lands?”
“It’s Hawksong business,” you say sternly. “He means you no harm, just… Keep your distance, okay?”
“So it IS dangerous?” comes a shout from somewhere in the crowd.
“No more than any other being would be, when frightened,” you say.
“I heard rumours of these things,” an elfmaid nearby says, eyes never leaving the prince. “Monsters being created by the humans, living weapons of war made by that awful Archmage of theirs, being tested on their own people!”
“What?!” Izzy demands. “My mother wouldn’t—”
“You’re the Archmage’s daughter?”
“Then you people DID make that that?!”
“Why would you make something like that, if not for war? Explain yourself—why is it here!”
You grimace a little bit at Izzy’s accidental disclosure, and its repercussions. You’re guilty of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, too, every now and again. All this cloak-and-dagger international intrigue is teaching you the value of silence; it isn’t just a matter of what you say, you’ve learned, but what you DON’T say. You’d expect Izirina Henzler—so sued to keeping secrets—to have mastered that by now… But maybe that’s just your lingering irritation speaking. Emotion gets the better of us all, sometimes…
And speaking of ‘emotion’ and ‘what you say’, it seems silence alone won’t get you out of THIS predicament. Luckily, you’ve had a lot of practice with the diplomatic discourse lately… And, you have a trump card.
