Essentially all art is defamiliarisation. Take a fairytale and make it grimdark, take a grimdark setting and make it noblebright, take a fantasy setting and make it intergalactic, take a modern setting and set it in the barbarian steppe or Aztecs, etc etc.
Also this is a good starting point because if you are familiar with the lore and enjoy the original established setting, it provides you with a template and some structure to follow, alter and adapt.

The Kermit the frog Bloodborne actually works quite well if you remember those Dark Souls eye frogs? that emit the curse gas in the swamp, the DS3 dlc marsh place had swarms of them they can be quite annoying
