The scouting expedition pushes further south as the sun descends from the sky, disappearing behind the treetops. Nocturnal animals begin to shriek in the rapidly-growing darkness, high up in the canopy still barely touched by the sun’s dying light. The clamor and darkness are good, as the Grasshoppers can use this to their advantage to remain hidden. After an hour or two of travel, the party seems to be coming upon a clearing in the distance. As the Grasshoppers approach, a carefully hidden trip wire is snapped by one of the scouts passing through the underbrush. With a vicious hiss, a large arrow or bolt streaks through the jungle and punctures one of the Grasshopper scouts through the thorax, dealing a nearly mortal blow. A torch blazes to life over the party, seeming to come from the canopy above. A narrow rope bridge is suspended in the canopy, connecting two large trees which also seem to have crude wooden pathways attached to them mid-trunk. The party hears something between a scream and a retch, and looks up to see a Medium-sized rat-like creature dipping an arrow in a black, tar-like substance with a bow in his other hand. Other creatures can be heard skittering towards the party in the canopy above, and through the torchlight the party can see that the large arrow that punched through the unfortunate Grasshopper scout is tipped with a similar tar-like substance…
Meanwhile, after a day of hard labor at the camp, the Queen orders her 2 remaining Wasp Skirmishers and 3 of her Bullet Ant Soldiers to head west and search for a meal for the hive. The Wasp Skirmishers hover through the jungle to the west with the Bullet Ants trundling dutifully behind. As they proceed through the darkening forest, they come across what looks like a lagoon, and see a campfire blazing merrily ahead. Outlined in shadow, the hunting party can see three medium-sized humanoids, with frills upon their heads and their skin (or hide) glistening in the firelight. They seem to be grilling some fish over the fire and can be heard speaking in low tones. They have basic leather armor and seem to be armed with spears which rest at their sides. They don’t seem to know that the hunting party is watching them…
