Water is the lifeblood of all; taint it, and all shall perish. Control the water, and you control the fate of civilisations. The oasis and the bandit village it serviced were ever so fragile for that reason.
In times of old, when you were at the zenith of your power, you engineered multiple diseases and plagues; some came with the wind, others with the water. The power to do that on such a vast scale was gone, but knowledge remained.
In the night, under the cover of the darkness you engineered, with a frail bottle and a primitive set of alchemy, a concoction that would aid you in this matter. Beyond the naked eye, smaller than small, there are creatures that are unseen. Much like those creatures, you tore off a small piece of your malice, cruelty, and desire to lord over all things.
In time, when properly spread, it would infect the oasis, which would in turn enthral the bandits. The only thing you needed to do now was to actually bring the potion to the oasis proper, and this was of such great importance that you could not afford to make any mistakes.
You would go yourself and unleash the poison into the oasis.
