I’m contemplating running a little novelty game inspired by old “play-by-mail” games. The most famous example of this genre is Diplomacy, but during the 80s there were hundreds of these games run solely through the postal system. More information here:
>>>/tg/85331196The basic idea would be:
>Start a thread on /qst/ with detailed info on the setting and rules>Instead of posting their orders in the thread, players send them privately through email>After a set period of time (one or two weeks, most likely), the players would receive a "reaction" email, with a detailed description of what happened to their character>The reaction email would also give a list of player characters who ran into each other, including their contact information (email, discord, etc). By contacting other players you could exchange notes, solve mysteries without waiting for a monthly reply, and make plans to team up in the future>At the same time as the reaction emails, updates would be posted in the thread: major happenings, new locations, in-world news, etc>And this whole time players would, of course, use the thread itself to chat and discuss things, or just give feedback on the gameThis system has some drawbacks (such as it’s slowness), but it also has some interesting benefits. It allows for a truly multiplayer experience on /qst/, with players running into each other, communicating through email, teaming up, getting into conflict with one another, etc.
Does any of this sound potentially interesting?
