Two of the Red Guard flanked the doorway, standing motionless even as the room shook again. That was the fifth time now. Or was it the sixth? Mas Amedda’s mind had begun to wander as he sat in the cold and rather spartan room. He was the Vice Chancellor, and at this moment he was utterly powerless. There wasn’t anything to do down here other than wait for the all-clear. No terminals to the outside, or communications. Just the Red Guard, some benches, and the Vice Chancellor of the Republic. Or Chancellor, now, if the Senate would ratify him. But who could tell how they would react after today?
Skywalker would be a problem. A brilliant general and a fearless warrior, but an awful political leader. His blundering might very well cost them everything. If they had managed to announce the assassination of Sidious to the senate, turn them all against the Jedi, then the Plan could have gone through, the Jedi all executed by soldiers loyal to the Republic instead of to them, but that damned Skywalker had blindly rushed ahead and ruined it by using codes only the Chancellor was supposed to use.
He still wasn’t sure how Skywalker had managed to do that. Those codes were supposed to be known only by the Chancellor himself. Perhaps it had been Sidious’s final act. A final stab at the jedi as he died. He would carry out the Plan, though he would not see it to fruition. But the Plan was in ruins. Everything had been invested in Sidious, and with his death went all their effort to unite the galaxy. The Separatists were free to act. The Republic was split in two. It was civil war, and there was no other way to address it. One in which the Jedi were still players.
The damn Separatists were also a problem. They answered to Sidious, and it would be difficult to get them together in one place for assassination now that he was dead. And the civil war might embolden them, bring out the opportunists looking to make more power, and money. He’d have to approach them through Sidious’s channels, try and see if they could work something out. Maybe woo them over somehow.
