Prowler didn’t sound too optimistic about the Deep One’s odds, but he kept trying to reconnect to the sub, just in case. There was nothing for it. All you could do was wait and hope for the best.
And so, you fought with reckless abandon, giving everything you had and then some. Without you noticing it, your pale green flames enveloped your entire body, and the Broodlings began exercising far more caution in their approach whenever you were around. Their whip-like tendrils were the hardest to deal with, as they were surprisingly strong and extremely flexible. You focused on disabling those first, and let the others get their shots in while you helped W and Flint lock them down.
You don’t know how much time passed after that, but you could feel that you were getting backed into a corner, even with Flint’s help. That was when a loud, rumbling explosion shook the room, and caused everyone to stumble for a moment.
“Prowler! Any updates?”
“She did it, but I’ve lost signal, and I don’t know where she is!”
Glass roared in frustration, swinging his arms around to slice and impale any and every giant bug that dared to leap at him. You prayed that the Morlock girl was alright, but you simply couldn’t spare the time or energy to worry about helping her right now. The Brood were beginning to get creative in their approach.
They started using their tentacles to grab nearby objects and throw them at you, or they used them as cover to soak up your group’s projectiles so that they could safely close the distance. The only thing that helped to alleviate the pressure was having the Prowler jump back into the fight with his full array of gadgets at his disposal.
“I’m running out of ammo!”
As if they perfectly understood Ana’s words, they started concentrating their attention on her.
“Fall back! We’ll cover you.”
But you knew you wouldn’t be able to keep this up. You’d have to either create an escape route, or load everyone into the pocket dimension and try to swim to the surface. Without Iara, that plan was a lot less viable, though…
All of your plans flew out of the window when a massive Broodling flew down from the ceiling to pounce on you. It was as big as a car, and looked twice as strong and durable as the others. And…it had wings!
You and W were the first to notice, and it was because of this that everyone else avoided being flattened by the thing. It whipped its tendrils around, knocking Glass and Prowler back. Ana brandished her spear and threw it at the creature’s chest, but it managed to catch it with one its hands! Its other hands reached out to grab you and W, but you were far too fast for it to accomplish that. And to your surprise, it actually tried to stab at Ana with her own weapon!
