I still had technology keep advancing in certain regards, primarily chemistry and material sciences, with the intention that they recycle the things they use/break/kill into more usable resources. I've seen a guy make knives out of chocolate and smoke, genetically modifying and chemically treating lignum vitae before giving it a nice coat with the right laminate varnish would be definitely comparable to metal, and sneaking some metal foam into your equipment and construction would make things a lot lighter for how sturdy they are. And this is tech that is available today, just rather pointless to pursue.
There's some things that don't have a real scientific explanation in my setting, like solid-state warm hydrogen which unleashes a lot of force as it is decompressed back into a gas, and is used as fuel for jet-powered weapons and occasionally armor as it becomes trialed for being an actual vehicular fuel source. Being hydrogen, it quickly mixes with the oxygen in the air and leaves a trail of mist where it passes and makes bubbles on the jet exhausts. Despite using a bunch of practical things, I still value the rule of cool.
Oh and on the topic of eco-friendly mecha, seeing this image may or may not have been a big influence in actually balling up and starting the quest.
