I recommend you don’t go overboard with that sort of thing. Establish a background and be done with it. The longer you spend on it - especially early in the quest - the slower your pace will be.
I usually have the protagonist design already in mind and a couple possible backstories. Maybe a couple changes depending on which backstory they pick (slight physique changes, difference in dress, etc)
