>>5882491“I haven’t chosen anything.” Jim corrects you. “Snowcap is well out of the way of both the rebels and the Rusalkan Guard. Makes no difference to me who comes out on top so long as we’re left alone. But I’ve heard stories about what that bastard Charles has been up to, and none of it is any good. Seems the Rusalkan Guard has grown accustomed to taking people away from their homes and forcing them to work in that awful Akzeriuth Mine. Many of the folks that go in there don’t even come back out alive. You ask me, he should be the one that loses.”
>“Yes…I’d heard something to that effect. This isn’t the first time this has happened though. I thought the Count had come to terms with the rebels five years ago?”“Empty promises.” Jim says darkly. “All they did was execute the last rebel leader, Douglas. Once the heat died down, they picked up right where they left off. It’s been like this for several years until one of the soldiers in the Count’s employ got fed up with it all. He took a few men from the castle and started a small rebel group that over time, ended up swelling with members. Nowadays, there’s no shortage of people that want the Count dead.”
>“Are the rebels that numerous?”Jim nods. “They weren’t always, but recently their numbers have increased considerably.” He smiles mischievously. “Believe it or not…that bastard Count’s son died during the war. You know the one, Rex d’Rusalka. Seems a lot of people were under the impression killing the Count would just cause his son to come down and burn everything down. But with Rex gone, folks are growing a lot bolder. There’s even talk of a full-blown attack on the castle!”
>“Ahh…I see.” You weren’t sure how to process that. “Would you happen to know where I could find these rebels? If possible, I’d very much like to have a word with their leader.”“Planning on signing up with them?” Jim asks. “You folks certainly look tough. I’m sure they’d be happy to have you. Plenty of loot you’ll probably be able to win as well. Head down to the mountain range south of here. Chances are they’ll find you before you find them. Just don’t tell them Jim sent you. We don’t want any trouble here.”
>“Of course, you have nothing to fear. Thank you for your help, Jim. We’ll be leaving now.” You turn your back to leave when the man suddenly calls back out for you.“Excuse me, ma’am!” He shouts from behind. “You said you were mercenaries, right? Ones that fought in the war? Out of curiosity…which side did you fight on?”
