Hasdrubal also tells you a little more of the background of Qarthadast - they overthrew their former masters who were called the Nazirites - Hasdrubal depicts them as being a far more barbaric and cruel enslaver race, but you are not sure if there is in truth a great deal of difference between either of them. Apparently Qarthadast did this by slowly altering the climate over many generations until it eventually precipitated an ecological collapse that led to widespread revolt and uprising against their former masters, who had grown soft and decadent as they acclimatised to luxurious and verdant fertile paradise worlds. Ever since that uprising, New Qarthadast now prefers to terraform all their planets into harsh deserts, to ensure that they will never succumb to weakness, and that the same fate cannot ever befall them. You also sense that Hasdrubal held something back from his tale - the power of ecosynthesis or planetary transformation could not have been so easily obtained by former slaves. Did they strike some form of bargain for this power?
