The blue Onion rises up in the water once you approach; just like every other Onion so far. You've found yet another new Pikmin subspecies- these are Blue Pikmin, and once you pluck one out of the wet soil beneath the pond- it is confirmed that they can breathe in the water!
Blue Pikmin are obviously suited for the water. Most notably, they have an open "mouth"- but before you can worry about them talking or biting anything, you notice quickly that its more of a gill-organ, gently filtering water that enters their mouth. On top of this, they have webbed hands and feet, and their body is even more smooth then other Pikmin.
Blue Pikmin can swim, and seem aware of the weakness of other Pikmin- when you place them near the shore, they help other Pikmin back out of the water before they drown. Hesitantly, you want to bring the aquatic pikmin species out of the water to see its capabilities on land... and it's surprisingly capable.
While not special, the Blue Pikmin are capable of walking and running just like any other Pikmin- on land and in the water. Their bodies are also covered with a slight mucus to keep them moist even outside of water, which makes sense given their amphibious nature. You also get the feeling this mucus might protect them slightly from stomach acids and let them slip out of the grip of larger monsters- meaning that <span class="mu-i">blue pikmin are slippery</span> and can survive creature attacks a little better then other Pikmin types.
With Blue Pikmin in tow, you now see how many opportunities have opened up for you. Every area on this planet so far has had small pools and streams of water here and there- even though you could make due without Blues, just having the ability to hunt aquatic creatures and the ability to help carry things through water it a huge help! Even better, the fact you found Blue Pikmin here in the lush expanse makes populating them easier. You grow a quick 30 blues from the nearby food stuffs; and find yourself with a few hours of daylight left this day. What should you focus on?
