“No problem.” You reply, “I’m Alex, by the way.”
“Ash.” He says, poking a thumb at himself, “I’d normally use this time to ask how an all-American girl such as yourself found herself in this hellhole, but I’m kind of in a hurry here.”
He turns on a heel and begins to sprint down the hall, but you call out to him and stop him in his tracks, “I don’t suppose you know where we are?”
All around you, the scittering of the bug-beasts picks up, meaning the second wave can’t be far behind.
“Look, if you’d like to talk, you gotta keep up, okay?”
So you follow his lead, and together you and Ash sprint through the maze, turning around at every dead end and praying the next path will lead to the exit.
“I take it you’re new here.” He says.
“Been here a day, maybe two. You?”
“Time isn’t something you really keep track of here, especially when you die and don’t get to move on to a better place, you just wake back up in the same god damn place as when you got here.”
The thought of being permanently trapped in Requiem terrifies you. “How many times have you died?”
Ash’s face twists uncomfortably, “Six. I think. One of ‘em wasn’t accidental.”
You appreciate the candid answer. “Stop.” You command, and to your surprise he obeys.
“Not sure if you were paying attention back there, but I’d rather not dance with more of those Xeno-whatchu-call-its, especially if you knew what I knew about how they birth those things. Believe me, you don’t wanna be making that call to the Planned Parenthood, it’s one baby they definitely can’t abort.”
You have no clue what he’s talking about and you don't want to, but you understand time is of the essence.
