Mostly for flavor, and as a bit of a challenge, as he'll now likely face larger hordes, making melee less appealing, especially as guns become more plentiful.
Also, may have missed it during my reading up of thread 1, but I'm guessing melee weapons are a lot more silent with less ghoul draw in exchange for being more tiring and perhaps more dangerous?]
