There are 3 forces and the Southern one may just be the one we can turn if they comply. They've been handed the short hand of the stick by being made to fight us instead of also retreating! This could be what convinces them. That and a pocket of wealth...>Advice: Skirmish formations are good against enemy Orderlies but don't expect to wipe them. Instead try to make them reconsider the fight 1 squaddie at the time. They're mercs but they are not particularly attached to the idea of "winning for their cause." It's not righteous enough unlike ours.
