“First off, I came here to apologize for swiping your quarry. It wasn’t anything personal, but I needed to remove his suit and destroy it before he could do any further damage.”
Sable stared at you from the other side of the desk for a good, long while, her steely blue eyes searching for any signs of duplicity or any hint of facetious behavior as her finger tapped impatiently on the metal surface.
Finally she nodded to herself and folded her hands in front of her.
“You mean before someone else could get to the suit before you.” she corrected. “Reed Richards informed me of the state it was in when you returned it to him. He said that the cuts were too precise; too clean for them to have been received in a battle. You didn’t just cut Maxwell out of the suit, you took what you wanted from it and then dropped them both off when it was no longer in your best interest to keep either of them.”
Sable leaned forward, never taking her eyes away from yours. “So do not pretend that what you did was some ‘courageous’ or ‘noble’ act. You were acting out of your own self-interest.”
Well…she kind of had you there. But on the other hand, you weren’t subscribed to the belief of letting prime opportunities slip through your fingers. That was the practice of a sucker. And you may be a lot of things, but a sucker wasn’t one of them.
“Can’t I do both?”
The question seemed to catch Sable off-guard, if the slight widening of her narrowed eyes was anything to go off of. She was most likely expecting you to deny her allegations or lash out at her.
“What do you mean?” she asked warily.
“Bring someone to justice, and fulfill my own interests at the same time. It’s not like the bad guys will be using them from prison, and the cops would only let them gather dust in lockup before the same villain escapes and steals them back within a month of getting put away.” you explained in a “matter-of-fact” manner of speaking.
“At least this way, I can keep it off the streets and make use of it to save people every now and again.” you reasoned.
Sable leaned back in her seat a bit, her intense aura diminishing somewhat. “That logic relies entirely on the possibility of you being responsible enough to avoid using such technology to harm others or further damage the city. Do you truly believe that you can continue acting in such a reckless manner without endangering the lives of innocent civilians?”
There was a note of challenge in her voice this time. Less accusatory, and more inquisitive.
